“Our Place in the Cosmos”, the third video from the Symphony of Science, was crafted using samples from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, Richard Dawkins’ Genius of Charles Darwin series, Dawkins’ TED Talk, Stephen Hawking’s Universe series, Michio Kaku’s interview on Physics and aliens, plus added visuals from Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi, History Channel’s Universe series, and IMAX Cosmic Voyage. The themes present in this song are intended to explore our understanding of our origins within the universe, and to challenge the commonplace notion that humans have a superior or privleged position, both on our home planet and in the universe itself.

As we reboot the world’s economy, Geoff Mulgan poses a question: Instead of sending bailout money to doomed old industries, why not use stimulus funds to bootstrap some new, socially responsible companies — and make the world a little bit better?

“Take ‘NO’ as a question… not as an answer.”

Watch Ervin Laszlo shed light on the emerging changes happening today and the urgent need for technological and social cooperation and world peace.

This message and news goes beyond the fear of global warming and embraces the shift in consciousness toward not only creative networking for revolutionary solutions but a evolutionary change in the way we live together as a global family.

Ervin László (born 1932 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian philosopher of science, systems theorist, integral theorist, and classical pianist. He has published about 75 books and over 400 papers, and is editor of World Futures: The Journal of General Evolution. Moreover, he has recorded several piano concertos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ervin_László

The WorldShift 2012 Declaration

“There is no doubt that we are now in a state of global emergency. This unprecedented worldwide crisis is a symptom of a much deeper problem - the current state of our consciousness: how we think about ourselves and our world. We have the urgent need, and now the opportunity, for a complete rethink: to reconsider our values and priorities, to understand our interconnectedness and to begin a new direction - living in harmony with nature and each other.”

The 999 It’s Time team has identified 9 core action areas where we can all engage with positive change. This interesting group of individuals, who are championing each cause include, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on consumerism, Sam Roddick who is tackling activism and founder Rory Spowers who will be promoting the issue of awareness. On 9th September 2009, 999 It’s Time will orchestrate 9 maximum profile events and actions, aligning itself with thought-leading activists, artists, scientists, politicians, economists and thinkers, to wed the most credible and creative ideas into the 999 It’s Time Manifesto.

On the same day, WorldShift 2012 will also be launched. This global movement is dedicated to co-creating the foundations of a peaceful, just and sustainable world by the end of 2012. The organisation believes that an enlightened government is needed to address these issues and seeks to unite and engage everyone in this process by signing the WorldShift 2012 Declaration to commit to transformational change.

Michael Pritchard’s water filter turns filthy water drinkable

Too much of the world lacks access to clean drinking water. Engineer Michael Pritchard did something about it — inventing the portable Lifesaver filter, which can make the most revolting water drinkable in seconds. An amazing demo from TEDGlobal 2009.

This outstanding talk by UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is very poinient and appropriately points out our interconnected and interdependent world. “We’re at a unique moment in history”, says Mr. Brown: “we can use today’s interconnectedness to develop our shared global ethic — and work together to confront the challenges of poverty, security, climate change and the economy.”

Here is an amazing talk about the energy revolutions happening throughout the planet. Paul Hawken’s talks about an energy movement without a name, lead by no one, that is the largest in recorded history, and is analogous to the complexity and function of our body’s natural immune system. He relates the ground swell of organizations addressing issues that benefit mankind and the planet and tries to connect the dots. He cites his new book “Natural Capitalism” which has received much attention. He speaks about everything to do with our connection to the earth and each other. From small community outreach groups to the formation of large NGO and Non-Profits. Including how the LEED certification program from USGBC is changing the way we interact and live in our buildings and cities.

In a recent 2009 Commencement speech Hawken’s said:
“The living world is not “out there” somewhere, but in your heart. What do we know about life? In the words of biologist Janine Benyus, life creates the conditions that are conducive to life. I can think of no better motto for a future economy. We have tens of thousands of abandoned homes without people and tens of thousands of abandoned people without homes. We have failed bankers advising failed regulators on how to save failed assets. Think about this: we are the only species on this planet without full employment. Brilliant. We have an economy that tells us that it is cheaper to destroy earth in real time than to renew, restore, and sustain it. You can print money to bail out a bank but you can’t print life to bail out a planet. At present we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it gross domestic product. We can just as easily have an economy that is based on healing the future instead of stealing it. We can either create assets for the future or take the assets of the future. One is called restoration and the other exploitation. And whenever we exploit the earth we exploit people and cause untold suffering. Working for the earth is not a way to get rich, it is a way to be rich.”

The video may be long, but it is well worth it.

I recently had the pleasure to meet with Robert Plarr and catch up on his current efforts to bring sustainability to the planet through Fully Sustainable Homes. I have been watching his progress with great interest and delight over the last couple of years.

WorldsNest and Sunsnest, have made a strategic partnership with GreenZilla to provide basic green sustainable homes starting cost at $130 sq. ft. sizes from 650 to 3600 sq.ft. sustainable prefabricated mobile or, permanent homes featuring GreenZilla breakthrough “breathing” ceramic wall, roof and floor panels that are mold, fire, shrink and water-proof, (yet “vapor” permeable) –you can even take a water hose and wash the inside and out side of your house with no damage

The mobile or permanent home includes
•solar electric
•passive solar grow, green house attachment that features double or triple green barrier compartments reducing heating, and air conditioning costs substantially in your living space,
•roof rain catchment system providing clean water
•full plant based grey and black waste water treatment system & air to water exchanger that makes potable water for drinking & growing vegetables •off grid or on grid backup energy systems
•additions or add-ons available vertical food grow systems ,appliances ,furniture

New U of T research looks to create organic solar cells by using special quantum effect

DailyTech/Jason Mick/1.18.09

###

Imagine having cheap, printable solar cells at your fingertips, woven into your clothing, streaming power into your mobile electronics. Organic electronics, a field which includes organic solar cells and organic transistor circuits, has many advantages, the biggest of which is the ability to be printed easily, and the ability to flex without breaking.

The team looked at conjugated polymers, one of the most efficient organic materials available for solar power production.  These long molecules can be also used in transistors and LEDs.  They behave roughly like semiconductors, while retaining important organic characteristics.  When exposed to light, they produce energy, which is transferred down their chain, eventually reaching other molecules and finally leaving the cell.

Read on…

The findings are reported in the Jan. 16 edition of the journal Science. The work was sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
